This was kind of unexpected. A tarantula on the trail while I was hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains.

We were walking around the city of Utrecht late in the afternoon. The sun was at an angle, shining through the bottom half of the archway near the old church in the center of town. I asked Tyler to stand in the archway as the lighting was spectacular and dramatic. He struck a pose or rather looked down the passageway and I snapped the photo. I love the details in the upper half of the photo. Making a photo monochrome really helps to bring out the texture. I sent the photo to Tyler and he loved it. It captured his wanderlust at the beginning of his journey around Europe.

This scene made me think of a flattened Japanese painting. The warm tone in this picture helped to create a nostalgic feeling. Looking out over the valley you can really see the layers of distance.

Hiking on the Mt Wilson trail afforded views of the Angeles National Forest receding into the distance. The trees crisscross lines caught my eye as did the atmospheric hazing caused by the sun setting in the background. I suppose the heavy particulate count in the air above Los Angeles may have had something to do with the lighting. Ahh smog! I suppose part of a photographers job is finding some sense of beauty in everything.

A few weeks ago I was hiking through the Angeles National Forest and came across this scene. The sun was setting and we had just passed this point while hiking and I turned and saw these beautiful trails of light sifting through the trees. Making a black and white image of it felt natural as it really brought out the contrast in the light.
