Aquarium - Light | 2008

Photography holds a special fascination for me. It captures the light of a specific, fleeting moment in time, unlike any other moment before or after. Once captured it is held in that state for an eternity. Light becomes sculptural, transfixed, ingrained. Which is something quite different from the flowing, ever changing world beneath the sea.

While working at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, I became fascinated by the quality and beauty of the light used to illuminate the exhibits. I loved the myriad forms and shapes of the marine animals on display, and how the light modeled and accentuated their individual characteristics.

As a photographer I am well aware of the importance of light and the difficulty in truly capturing its essence. Photographed using only available light with high speed black and white film, I set out to capture the beauty of aquarium light on these remarkable creatures.
