A Day in a Year

A photo a day for 365 days. From December 4, 2009 - December 3, 2010.

Whitney

Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the 48 contiguous United States, at 14,500’, is the subject of this set of images. Taken on a recent 22 mile hike to the summit, they are a collection of images, my perspective on this ancient peak, and how I interpreted it’s vastness, its figure and it’s solitude.

Read more about the adventure in my Mt. Whitney blog entry.

Dust

This series is an exploration of objects in a state of decay. Using a high contrast, monotone palette, I wanted to accentuate the textures and surfaces of my subjects.

Vipassana

This set was taken at the beginning of my interest in Vipassana meditation, and is my visual interpretation of this Buddhist practice. Part of the practice of Vipassana is noting what is the object of distraction, from a sound to a thought, which then in turn, becomes the object of meditation. This series was taken within a small area of each other in the city of Long Beach, California.

Rummage

A set of images of antiques, hand-me-downs, and assorted chachkes. All arranged in relation to each other. All arranged by the individual vendor.

Motion

Speed, time, stasis. These images were captured traveling at high speeds on freeways and roads. All done in camera, they are captured images of milliseconds of time, that illustrate movement of both my camera and my subject.

A number of these images were used to create the visuals for the Om Nama video I worked on for Long Beach Meditation.

Desert

Form, texture, color and light. These are the building blocks of visual perception. They are motifs I have been working with through my photography for many years. I try to find these elements whenever I compose a picture. On a recent trip to the Anza Borrego Desert in Southern California, I was taken in by the array of shapes, tones and textures, from the small curved protrusions on the fishhook cactus to the haunting skeletal structures of the expired cholla bush. I found the desert to be a perfect setting to explore the formal qualities of black and white photography.
